Smokehouse BBQ
About This Spot
Stepping into Smokehouse BBQ in Port Royal feels a bit like being welcomed into a well-worn local favorite—unpretentious, unhurried, and full of genuine Southern spirit. It’s the kind of place where the hum of conversation mingles with the faint aroma of smoked meat, inviting you to settle in and savor the moment. The pace is easygoing, the atmosphere relaxed, and the mood warmly familiar, as if you’ve found a backyard gathering where everyone knows the value of good food and simple company.
The heart of the experience here is unmistakably the barbecue itself—a true reflection of careful craft and patience. From the tender pulled pork to ribs that gently fall away from the bone, the flavors speak loudly without needing an excess of sauce or adornment. There’s a quiet confidence in the way the brisket is smoked to perfection, moist and savory, quietly melting in your mouth. And while the restaurant has a straightforward, no-frills vibe, it’s clear that care and pride go into every plate served.
Beyond the meats, the sides and staples carry their own stories—creamy, comforting mac & cheese, crisp and simple coleslaw, and freshly made sauces that balance sweetness and a gentle tang. Whether you’re gathered around a combo platter or sharing pulled pork nachos, the offerings feel thoughtfully composed to complement each other without overshadowing the main event.
There is an honest, homegrown rhythm to the place. It’s a spot that may not be polished to perfection, but that rawness reinforces its authenticity, much like a long-loved neighborhood dive where the focus is on the food and friendly human moments rather than fancy frills. The staff, inviting and familiar, add to that grounded feeling, making it an easy place to relax and enjoy a meal shared with friends or family.
In a town surrounded by water and coastal charm, Smokehouse BBQ stands out for its steady dedication to true smokehouse flavors and an atmosphere that simply welcomes you to slow down, savor each bite, and soak in a slice of Port Royal’s local life.

A true hidden JEM!!! Meats so good they don’t need sauce!!! Ribs were EXCELLENT, meaty, juicy and tender!! Perfect subtle rub that ENHANCED the flavor!!! Not over done or distracting!!! Brisket was done to PERFECTION!!!! Very moist and tender!!! Perfect rub and not overdone to distract from the true meaty flavor!!!! Melts in your mouth goodness….and no sauce required!!!! Mac & Cheese was to die for!!!! Cole Slaw was my favorite as I loved the prep on its fineness…. Not over sweet nor to tart a very fine balance to complement any main dish!!! Baked Beans we’re good…and a good add to main dish!! I’d like to see more variety of added brisket and peppers… but that’s me… still very good!!! Avocado Shrimp Salad is an excellent balanced meal!!! Flavorful and Fresh!!!! If your hungry the Fully loaded Pulled Pork Nachos are a Feist in itself!!! Packed Full of lots of Pulled Pork, cheese, salsa/tomato’s and jalapeño’s drizzled with sauce…. A Pure Delight to one’s tastebuds!!!! Overall all a FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!!!! Waitress was VERY GOOD and SUPER FRIENDLY and EFFICIENT!!! We lacked nothing but bigger stomachs!!!! So Many Delightful Dishes to Choose from!!!!

The food tastes good but the restaurant is just dirty. The floors look like they’ve never once been mopped and there just seems to be a layer of grime across everything. Maybe it’s suppose to add to the charm but to me it just felt gross.

A small, unpretentious BBQ, restaurant. They seem to stay busy and it may be hard to get a table, but the wait is worth it. The pulled pork is tender and juicy and you get plenty of it. They have both a red and a gold sauce, both of which are slight sweet. I had cole slaw and green beans for sides and both were quite good. The slaw was simple with just cabbage and carrots and the green beans were nicely seasoned.

Smokehouse BBQ in Port Royal never disappoints. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection — the pulled pork is tender and smoky, the ribs fall right off the bone, and the sauces are spot on. You can tell everything is made with care and pride. The staff is friendly and welcoming every time, and the laid-back local atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a casual lunch or dinner. Whether you’re a BBQ lover or just passing through, this place is a must-try. Highly recommend the brisket sandwich and mac & cheese — you won’t regret it!

This place is THE REAL DEAL! I loved just about everything about it, especially the brisket, fries, and Texas toast that I had here. I'm travelling through the Southeast and like to try local barbecue joints when I find one. Earlier in the week, in Savannah, I had some brisket at a bbq joint there. It was good, but not in the same league as what I had at Smokehouse BBQ today. First off, the portions at Smokehouse BBQ were about twice the size as what I got in Savannah. But more importantly, all three of the items that I ate (brisket, a double order of fries, and Texas toast) were wonderful. I would say easily a 9 on a 10 scale, and maybe even higher. Their bbq sauce was also excellent. The other factor that I really enjoyed was the very simple looks of both the exterior and interior of the restaurant. Nothing fancy or expensive. They're not wasting money on the building. It was comfortable, and super casual, and had everything I needed. Being from out of town, I wasn't sure what the vibe of the joint would be. Who were the typical customers? Would the employees have any kind of attitude towards someone that wasn't a regular? All I can say is that the staff treated me professionally and the mix of customers was exactly the same type of people I met elsewhere in Port Royal and Beauford. Quite a few families, too. I highly recommend this place if you're in to bbq. This was my favorite meal during a week of travelling through the southeast.
